“This is one of the most unsettling books I’ve ever read. It has an unsettling documentary-like quality to it.” —The New York Times’ Michiko Kakutani “Bret Easton Ellis is a serious and conventional American novelist. Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nathanael West, and Joan Didion are among his ancestors, making him a model of literary filial piety.” —The New York Times “In a work of contemporary literature, Hollywood’s version of success has never looked so terrifying.” —From Newsday “Astonishing. … a killer—sexy, sassy, and depressing… It’s a no-holds-barred teen slice-of-life book. It hurts where it hurts because of the way it feels.” The Village Voice says:

Bret Easton Ellis’ debut book, Less Than Zero, was released in 1985. It was his first published work, released while he was still a student at Bennington College at the age of 21. The title of the novel was inspired by an Elvis Costello album of the same name.
The story revolves around Clay, a wealthy young college student who returns to his hometown of Los Angeles, California for the winter break in 1984. Clay outlines his gradual isolation from the world around him, his lack of faith in his colleagues, and his reflections on current events in first-person narration. 1st
Clay embarks on a series of drug-fueled nights of drinking, during which he has one-night stands with both sexes, after reuniting with his ex-girlfriend Blair and friends including Trent, who is now a successful model. He attempts to track down Julian, his best friend from high school, with whom he hasn’t spoken in months, while partying. Clay recounts a holiday spent with his parents and grandparents, during which he appeared to be the only one concerned that his grandmother was dying of cancer, in between explanations of his days and nights.

This coolly mesmerizing novel, set in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, is a raw, powerful portrayal of a lost generation who have been exposed to sex, drugs, and disaffection at an early age, in a world shaped by casual nihilism, passivity, and too much wealth, a place devoid of feeling or hope.

Clay returns home for Christmas break from his Eastern college and re-enters a languid relationship.
Clay (Less Than Zero), Blair (Less Than Zero), Kim (Less Than Zero), Alana (Less Than Zero), Julian (Less Than Zero), and several more… Trent (Less Than Zero), Rip (Less Than Zero), Griffin (Less Than Zero), Finn (Less Than Zero), Daniel (Less Than Zero), Daniel (Less Than Zero), Trent (Less Than Zero), Trent (Less Than Zero), Trent (Less Than Zero), Trent (Less Than Zero), Trent (Less Than Zero), Trent (Less Than Zero), Trent (Less Than Zero), Trent (Less Than Zero), Don’t you just want to hit his corny face in the face with that arrogant look? It’s a face made to be stomped into the dirt. I despise Justin Long. Despite the fact that I adored him in the final moments of Jeepers Creepers, he was ideal for the part of Gutted Horror Survivor. Less Than Zero is another one of my pet peeves. This book is to blame for all of the ennui-inducing, masturbatory nonsense that flooded the world in the 1980s. why shouldn’t

Less Than Zero is his debut book. Bret Easton Ellis established a watershed moment for a generation that lacked a voice. Ellis is now regarded as the ‘celebrity author’ of the postmodern period, using the minimalist style for which the novel became popular, and was first published in 1985 when he was 21 and still a student at Bennington College. Postmodern fiction authors, also known as “Blank Fiction” writers, elegantly use a minimalist plot with flat characters in a straightforward format, and Ellis, as a confirmed member of the “Brat Pack,” incorporates urban life, crime, drugs, and consumerism.
Clay, the 18-year-old protagonist and a student at Camden College in New Hampshire, returns to Los Angeles for Christmas break in the book. Clay discusses his old life’s apathy, loneliness, and isolation by attending many parties, concerts, affairs, and drug use with his old friends. While Ellis has been chastised for his straight nihilism, inserting his own celebrity image into his art, and creating a universe of immature characters who appear to grow older but have no impact, it is debatable if Less Than Zero is simply that – a world populated by rich and superficial characters with no intent.
