The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University (GU) has a Public Relations and Publications Office that offers information on a range of issues for deaf and hard-of-hearing children and young adults from infancy to age 21. The office answers questions and collaborates with writers from around the country to design, print, and distribute books, videotapes, periodicals, and other materials for deaf and hard-of-hearing children, their families, and the professionals who support them. Laurent Clerc was born on December 26, 1785, in a small village near Lyons, France. He was born deaf, but he lost his hearing when he was one year old when he fell into a fire. He lost both his hearing and his sense of smell as a result. His right side of his face was severely burned, and he would be scarred for the rest of his life. The scars, on the other hand, only served to differentiate him in later years. The scar was also used to create a sign for his name.
Laurent enrolled at the Royal Institution for the Deaf in Paris at the age of 12 and excelled in his studies. The school asked him to continue on as an assistant teacher after he graduated. He was promoted to teach the highest class because he was a committed instructor.
Clerc once traveled to Washington, D.C. after being summoned to testify before the United States Congress. When he met President James Monroe, he became interested in Sign Language after seeing Clerc sign.
Clerc married one of his students, Eliza Crocker Boardman, in 1819. They were the parents of six children. In 1858, he stopped teaching. He never returned to France, despite his intentions. He died in the United States on July 18, 1869.

The Clerc Center, a federally sponsored national deaf education center, ensures that the nation’s diverse population of deaf and hard of hearing students (birth to age 21) are trained, motivated, and have the linguistic competence to optimize their capacity as active and contributing people. Early language access and acquisition, excellent teaching, family engagement, testing, recognition and implementation of best practices, cooperation, and knowledge sharing across schools and programs across the country are all used to achieve this goal.
