In January 1978, KRIX joined the band. During the 1980s, the station was co-owned with KRIO and broadcasted a rock format under the banner “99X.” During the decade, KRIX was sold twice: in 1982 to H&H Communications and in 1986 to Norman Drubner’s Daytona Group.
Under Sunbelt Media ownership, KRIX flipped to Rhythmic CHR as KRGY “Energy 99.5” in February 1991. KRGY immediately made a dent in the ratings of existing CHR station KBFM, and improved its own ratings from 3.6 in the summer of 1990 as KRIX to 6.5 in 1991 with the new format.
