Yang Bingyi began his career at Heng Tai Fung (), a Taiwanese cooking oil retailer, where he worked for ten years. He then desired to strike out on his own in order to provide for his family. In 1958, he founded a cooking oil retailer with his Hakka partner, Lai Penmei. Din Tai Fung was created by merging Yang’s previous employer, “Heng Tai Fung,” with their current supplier, “DinMei Oils.” [number four]
Around 1970, tinned cooking oil became widely available, and business fell precipitously. The owner of Heng Tai Fung proposed that Yang and Lai convert half of the shop to produce and sell steamed buns in order to remain afloat (xiaolongbao). The buns became so successful that in 1972, the store stopped selling oil and transformed into a full-fledged restaurant. The original restaurant is located on Taipei’s Xinyi Road. (5)
