John Greenleaf Whittier (December 17, 1807 – September 7, 1892) was an American Quaker poet and abolitionist who lived from 1807 to 1892. He was influenced by Scottish poet Robert Burns and is often referred to as one of the fireside poets. Whittier is best known for his anti-slavery writings and the book Snow-Bound, which he published in 1866.
On December 17, 1807, John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, to John and Abigail (Hussey) Whittier at their rural homestead.
[1] His middle name, feuillevert, is believed to be derived from his Huguenot forefathers.
[2] He grew up on the farm with his parents, a brother and two sisters, a maternal aunt and paternal uncle, as well as a steady stream of visitors and hired farm hands. Whittier was found to be color-blind as a child because he couldn’t tell the difference between ripe and unripe strawberries. [3] Their farm was not very lucrative, and they were barely scraping by. Whittier was not made for hard farm work and lived his whole life in poor health and physical frailty. Despite his lack of formal schooling, he was an avid reader who researched his father’s six Quaker books until their teachings became the bedrock of his philosophy. Whittier was influenced greatly by his religion’s teachings, especially its emphasis on humanitarianism, compassion, and social responsibility.
