What can you do with a physics degree? take 2

I am a high school senior in the United States who is considering my options for university. I’m really interested in theoretical physics, and I’d like to work as a professor in the field (I’ve self-studied a lot of it, and though I’m no expert, I can do enough to have a respectable reputation on the Physics S.E.). However, I’ve been hearing some very alarming things about being a physics professor in particular from others already in academia. First and foremost, I’ve heard that each new crisis permanently harms the job market in academia as a whole. Second, I’ve learned in many places (including here, if my memory serves me correctly) that the job market for new mathematics professorships is beginning to dry up, implying that physics professorships are likely to follow suit. I’ve heard a lot of personal anecdotes from friends with academic parents about how talented people who went to top schools are now either unable to find work at all or can only find work at small, virtually unknown universities. Finally, I’ve learned from a few physics professors and chairs that finding a first spot in physics is challenging in general (though it is apparently relatively straightforward to achieve tenure once you get your foot in the door, so to speak).
