Jean and jane hopkins
Emily Jane Hopkins, 41, was discovered dead in her home with her two children in an affluent Dallas suburb in July 1997. Before killing herself in the bathtub, she slit the throats of her 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter.
Hopkins had asked a neighbor the day before to send her ex-husband, Clayton Elliot, a photo album containing family photos. When he came for a visit, he discovered his son’s body in the kitchen. The other two bodies were discovered upstairs by police.
Hopkins had a twin sister, Jean, who suffered from mental illness and had attempted suicide and poisoned her children in the past. Elliot had been advised by her husband to consider separating the children from their mother, particularly as her actions became more erratic.

As a ‘baby boomer’ and a service user, I admit to having a vested interest in ensuring that future services and the workers providing them will allow me to remain as independent and self-caring as possible as I grow increasingly frail.
Since my retirement in 2007 as a Psychiatric (Forensic) Social Worker after a forty-year career, I have remained active in the Health and Social Care sector as a lay delegate, contributing to a variety of NHS boards, working forces, and ‘Task and Finish’ groups, serving as one of the London Clinical Senate’s PPVs, and helping to build Greenwich CCG’s Frailty pathway. I try to be honest in both my function as an older, visually impaired person (registered disabled in 1998) and in giving a voice to local grassroots user-groups that are barely heard or ignored.

Jean Hopkins married Frank Hopkins and they raised three children in Kennebunk. Jean worked in a variety of fields, the majority of which were related to health care. She had a wonderful way with people and was always able to bring a smile on her patients’ faces by demonstrating tremendous compassion and empathy.
Jean continued to explore her passion for art after retirement, taking classes and eventually becoming an accomplished artist. She enjoyed gardening and could still be found working in the yard. Yoga, Kennebunk Beach, winters in Florida with Vern, spending time with her family, and visiting her daughter’s family in Maryland were some of her favorite things. She was a devout Catholic who enjoyed attending Mass at the Monastery in Kennebunkport.
Jean is survived by her long-time companion, Vern Adams of Buxton and Florida, and his family; sons, Thomas “Mick” (Mary) of Westbrook, and William (Cindy) of Wells; daughter, Holly Hopkins Howe (Eric) of Maryland; grandchildren, Allie Hopkins Harvell (Thomas), Thomas Hopkins (Patrick), Evan Hopkins, and MacKenzie Howe; great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn and Benjamin Harvell; and
