Empathic listening (also known as active listening or reflective listening) is a form of listening and responding to others that encourages mutual understanding and trust. It is a necessary skill for both third parties and disputants, as it allows the listener to receive and correctly interpret the speaker’s message, as well as respond appropriately. The answer is an important part of the listening process and can determine whether or not a negotiation or mediation is effective. Empathic listening is one of its advantages.

When we listen, we do so for a variety of reasons, based on the goals we’re attempting to accomplish. When determining what your target as a listener is, it’s important to consider the four different styles of listening. Appreciative, empathic, thorough, and essential listening are the four styles of listening. Learn about the various styles of listening so that you can reinforce and refine your ability to think objectively and assess what you’ve learned.
You are looking for fun as you listen for appreciation. Consider the music you want to listen to. The majority of the time, you listen to music because you like it. When someone is speaking, the same can be said about appreciative listening. Appreciative listening can be found in sermons from places of worship, motivational speeches from people we admire or hold in high regard, and even stand-up comedians that make us laugh.
When you listen empathically, you’re demonstrating that you care for the other person. You try to identify with the speaker by comprehending the situation he or she is discussing during this type of listening. You’re putting yourself in the shoes of the other to better understand what he or she is doing. You should usually be completely present in the moment or mindfully listening to what the speaker is saying while doing this form of listening. During this time, your aim is to concentrate on the speaker rather than on yourself. You’re attempting to comprehend from the speaker’s point of view.
