The Katherine K. Herberger College of the Arts and the College of Architecture at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, combined in 2009 to form the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. On April 30, 2009, the Arizona Board of Regents approved the merger. 1st The Herberger Institute is divided into five schools: the School of Art, the School of Arts, Media, and Engineering, the Design School, the New American Film School, and the School of Music, Dance, and Theater. Arizona State University (ASU) and the Herberger Center for Architecture and the Arts are searching for a Director of The Design School. The director will lead the school’s critical engagement in ASU’s vision for a New American University, a reinvention of higher education in which design practices are a central value for the nation’s largest public university and global research institution. The director will be in charge of a diverse school that will train a new generation of architects and designers from different backgrounds to succeed in the twenty-first century. The Dean of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts reports to the director of The Design School. The preferred start date for this full-time, fiscal-year position is July 1, 2021. Experience and credentials will decide the form of appointment and academic rank.

The ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, which is made up of a diverse range of disciplines, is at the forefront of research into innovation and artistic practice in the twenty-first century. Many of the institute’s programs consistently rank in the top ten nationally, and its six schools have more than 45 fields of study: architecture, humanities, media and engineering, dance, fashion, music, theatre and film. The Herberger Institute Community Programs allow students and faculty to engage with the public through meaningful collaborations, while the ASU Art supports our research initiatives. Our students take advantage of enriching opportunities for exploration and discovery that equip them with the skills they need to become innovative leaders in their chosen fields.

Each year, ASU Gammage collaborates with the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts to award the ASU Gammage Herberger Scholarship to two outstanding students in the fields of theater and/or dance. The scholarship helps recipients to collaborate with ASU Gammage staff and visiting Broadway and/or Outside company members for mentoring and career opportunities.
