Since the Greenfield Fire Department is a Civil Service agency, anyone interested in working as a permanent firefighter must first pass a statewide competitive test for firefighters, which is held every other year in the Spring. This exam consists of two parts: a 50 percent written exam and a 50 percent entry-level physical abilities test. To be considered for the role, applicants must take and pass all sections of the exam. After passing both tests, a list is created based on the student’s score and preferences. This list is good for a period of two years. The next written exam for 2020 will be held on March 21, 2020, with an application deadline of February 4, 2020.
Applications for call center jobs are collected and held on file before a vacancy becomes available. Many who have submitted applications are interviewed and given jobs awaiting a physical examination. On the bimonthly call force training nights, new hires are educated.
