Gray’s anatomy for students: second south asia edition

Gray’s Anatomy is a human anatomy textbook written in English by Henry Gray and illustrated by Henry Vandyke Carter. Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical, Anatomy of the Human Body, and Gray’s Anatomy: Descriptive and Applied were the titles of earlier editions, but the book is more widely shortened to Gray’s Anatomy, and later editions are titled as such. The book is widely regarded as a seminal work on the topic, and it has been revised and republished several times since its initial publication in 1858. The book’s new edition, the 42nd, was published in October 2020.
Henry Gray, an English anatomist, was born in 1827. In 1853, he was appointed Lecturer on Anatomy at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London, where he researched the growth of the endocrine glands and spleen. In 1855, he approached his colleague Henry Vandyke Carter with the concept of developing a low-cost, easy-to-understand anatomy textbook for medical students. The two worked for 18 months on what would become the basis of the novel, dissecting unclaimed bodies from workhouse and hospital mortuaries under the Anatomy Act of 1832. John William Parker in London was the first to publish their work in 1858. 1st

In 1855, Gray and Carter started work on their second collaborative book, a huge tome that covered the anatomy of the entire human body and was directed at both medical students and accomplished surgeons. Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical was initially published as a dissection manual, but it has since developed into Gray’s Anatomy, the most detailed account of current anatomical information available. Editions tracked not only the evolution of medical expertise and imaging techniques over time, but also the evolving types and techniques of medical illustration. The first edition was published in 1858, and there have been 40 additional editions since then. Henry Vandyke Carter used photographs of exceptional clarity and accuracy to bring the book’s text to life. The illustrations were crucial in ensuring the work’s huge success. Some were so well-designed that they were reused for several editions; in fact, the 39th edition was the last time one of Carter’s original drawings was used: “Creation of the Sacrum” (2005).

Gray’s anatomy: leatherbound edition

He met Henry Vandyke Carter, a medical student with a knack for drawing, in 1853. For his work “The structure and use of the human spleen,” Gray won the Astley Cooper Prize (100 pounds, or around £13000 today). Carter contributed over 50 drawings to his 350-page book, but no credit was given and payment was incomplete. Gray approached Carter again in 1855, this time to discuss the idea of writing a textbook for medical students. Carter was more cautious this time, starting work only after being promised £10 (£1000 in today’s money) a month for 15 months to produce drawings. To put that into perspective, I find one online freelance book illustrator who earns £320 a day! The first copies were ready for printing by summer 1858, in time for the students who would arrive later that year.
