Waivers cannot be used to pay for tuition fees, living costs, or other expenses, and they cannot be refunded to the student. Please note that not all tuition waivers would extend to all forms of tuition charges (for example, joint credits taken at other North Dakota University System institutions), and students should check their eligibility before registering.
This award is open to students who wish to apply and compete for it. Recipients must be from an under-represented community as specified by the federal government and demonstrate financial need. Regardless of the recipient’s state of residency, the award results in a tuition waiver equal to the North Dakota resident tuition rate. The prize may be renewed each year. The Graduate Assistant Waiver waives the base tuition in its entirety. Engineering students are exempt from paying the Engineering Differential Tuition in full. Graduate assistants can earn a stipend in addition to a waiver to conduct research, teaching, and service activities. Assistantships are either 1/4-time, requiring an average of 10 hours per week of student time to complete assigned tasks, or 1/2-time, requiring 20 hours per week of student time. Students who have submitted their Program of Study to the Graduate School but have not yet finished their thesis, paper, or dissertation must enroll in at least one Continuous Enrollment credit per semester (fall and spring semester only). A student must have secured a tuition waiver for the previous or subsequent academic term to be eligible for a summer tuition waiver (spring or fall semester). The Graduate School determines eligibility. Audit courses are not covered by the Graduate Assistant Waiver because they are not part of a student’s Plan of Study (course work).
