She’d been looking out the dining-car window with an almost palpable joy since Atlanta. Over her morning coffee, she watched the last of Georgia’s hills fade away, revealing red earth and tin-roofed houses set in the center of swept yards, with the obligatory verbena growing in the yards, surrounded by whitewashed tires. When she first saw a TV antenna atop an unpainted Negro home, she smiled; as they grew in number, her joy grew.

Harper Lee’s novel Go Set a Watchman was released by HarperCollins in the United States and Willam Heinemann in the United Kingdom on July 14, 2015. While it was written before Harper Lee’s first and only other published book, the Pulitzer Prize-winning To Kill a Mockingbird—and was originally marketed as a sequel by its publisher—it is now generally regarded as a first draft of the popular novel. “For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman, and let him announce what he seeth,” says Isaiah 21:6. It alludes to Jean Louise Finch’s perception of her father, Atticus Finch, as Maycomb’s moral compass (“watchman”), and has a disillusionment theme as she learns about the level of bigotry in her hometown.
Maycomb is a town in Alabama. Jean Louise Finch – “Scout” – is 26 years old and has returned home from New York City to see her ailing father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the South’s changing political landscape and civil rights tensions. When Jean Louise discovers unsettling truths about her close-knit family, the place, and the people she loves, her homecoming becomes bittersweet. Fortunately, Lee totally rewrote it, changing all of the characters and incidents (the outcome of Tom Robinson’s trial, for example), resulting in a beautiful and unforgettable book. To Kill a Mockingbird is the title of that edition, which you can read. Publication The people in charge of Lee’s estate are using Go Set a Watchman to make money. It isn’t nearly as well-written as TKAM and lacks the same compelling characters. It’s really of interest to those interested in learning more about Lee’s artistic process. If you’re just a regular TKAM fan, you should probably skip this one. (reduced)
