Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva, also known as Fred, is a Brazilian footballer who currently plays for the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer. He was educated at Hillwood Girls’ School (Hillwood College, Kandy); Trinity College, Kandy; and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, where he was classmates with Dudley Senanayake. He was born to George E. de Silva, a prominent lawyer and legislator. For his senior year, he returned to Trinity College. In 1931, he was awarded the Open Law Scholarship to Ceylon Law College, and in 1935, he became a proctor and joined his father’s firm, De Silva & Karunaratne. In 1950, he became an Advocate, and in 1959, he was admitted to the Gray’s Inn as a Barrister. He was also the President of the Kandy YMCA and played rugby union for the Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club and the Kandy Sports Club.
