More than 1500 applications were submitted by the H-E-B awards committee from educators across Texas. Sixteen early childhood providers were chosen as Semi-Finalists from those who applied, and they competed in the regional judging process. Fred Douglass’ written remarks as well as the school’s comprehensive professional achievements wowed the judges.
FDECC Principal Deloris Dowell said, “I feel that this achievement reiterates the awesome job that my staff accomplishes everyday, quarterly, and yearly.” “Being called a semifinalist is a major achievement for FDECC. At Fred Douglass, we are a team, and providing the best education for our students necessitates cooperation among all stakeholders. At our campus, we go above and beyond, and it helps students succeed.”
The HEB Early Childhood Award was created to assist schools such as FDECC that specialize in the care and education of children under the age of five. The Texas Education Agency has awarded FDECC the Gold Standard as a Pre-K Center of Excellence, and it is a pioneer in early childhood education, with the only dedicated Pre-K and Head Start campus in Grayson County. During the judging process, Dowell claims that her staff’s relentless emphasis on student achievement and family involvement was the ultimate highlight of FDECC.

Comparing the outcomes of one state to that of another isn’t always a fair or reliable comparison.
