To save a doomed space mission and discover the true form of her universe, a young scientist from 2D space must solve mathematical mysteries. The geometrical inhabitants of Flatland reject the notion of a third dimension in a world with only two dimensions, length and width. When a scientist (Danny Pudi) finds a mathematical phenomenon, he turns to Hex (Kristen Bell), an outcast mathematician shunned for her observations on the third dimension. The two Flatlanders are thrown into a race through dimensions to discover the true form of their universe after an unlikely reunion with Spherius (Michael York), a 3D being.

Sphereland: A Fantasy About Curved Spaces and an Expanding Universe is a 1965 adaptation of Dionys Burger’s 1957 novel Bolland: een roman van gekromde ruimten en uitdijend heelal, and is a sequel to Flatland,[2] a novel by “A Square” (a pen name of Edwin Abbott Abbott). Flatland’s social and mathematical roots are expanded upon in this book. It differs from the first novel in that it concludes with a more realistic conclusion and treatment of society.
The Circles (who are named as Flatland’s priests/leaders due to their many sides, or the presence of many sides) do not believe A Square’s revelation about a third dimension is right, and A Square is shunned by his kin. Over a period of time, culture becomes more receptive to Spaceland’s innovations, as well as to reform and progress in general. If a well-known surveyor discovers a Triangle with more than 180 degrees, he is shot and widely regarded as a lunatic, since such a construction is impossible in Euclidean geometry. Since he is a mathematician and scientist, he finally becomes acquainted with A Square’s grandson, A Hexagon. They come up with a hypothesis to describe the strange measurements: they reside on a massive sphere, and the Triangles have more than 180 degrees since they are inscribed on a non-planar surface.

A dream of alien, glowing symbols awakens the 2-dimensional Arthur Square. His mom, Arlene Square, and his curious granddaughter Hex, a hexagon, live with him. Hex and Arthur speak about inheritance rules, and how each new generation of Flatlanders gains a new hand, starting with triangles, until the shapes are indistinguishable from circles. They often speak about how the form of a citizen affects their work, with triangles doing menial labor and circles ruling Flatland in the priest class. They witness a cruel incident in which a Circle Priest arrests a slightly abnormal octagon girl, causing Hex to wonder about her pentagonal parents once more. Arthur assures her that he will inform her later.
