Stuttgart is Germany’s sixth-largest city, located in southern Germany. Billboard began as a trade publication for the advertisement and bill-posting industries in 1894. The official motto of the United States of America’s Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the University of Massachusetts Amherst is Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem. “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty,” is a popular loose translation into English. The literal translation, on the other hand, is “she seeks a quiet peace under liberty with the sword.” The word “she” in question comes from the full phrase manus haec inimica tyrannis ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem, which translates to “this side, an opponent of tyrants, seeks a quiet peace under liberty with the sword.”
It was written around 1660 by Algernon Sidney, an English soldier-statesman who was an opponent of Charles II and was later executed for treason. The Massachusetts General Court (official name of the state legislature) first adopted the motto in 1775 and added it to the state’s temporary seal. The legislature approved its submission to the new Great Seal of Massachusetts on December 13, 1780.

DonateTo help victims of countless disasters around the world each year, such as the recent earthquake in Haiti, we ask New Yorkers to donate online to the International Response Fund, which will provide urgent relief and long-term support to those in need through equipment, technical assistance, and other means.
Become a volunteer
We are not hiring New York volunteers to travel to Haiti because international disaster responses are usually funded by each country’s local Red Cross society and International Red Cross delegates. Those interested in joining the American Red Cross in Greater New York’s disaster volunteer team, which helps with local and national disaster response efforts, can visit www.nyredcross.org/volunteer for more information.
