Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a category of clinical symptoms that affect the masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joint, and are characterized by muscular or joint pain, dysfunction (limited or altered functions), and joint noises, as well as other symptoms including stress headaches, otalgia, dizziness, tinnitus, and others. Fibromyalgia (FM) is a condition with an unclear etiology that involves generalized chronic pain followed by other symptoms such as asthenia, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and other less common symptoms such as temporomandibular disorders in a high percentage of cases (TMD).
Fibromyalgia and temporomandibular disorders of muscle pain share many epidemiological, psychiatric, and physiopathological symptoms since they both affect the muscular system. As a consequence, we are led to believe that, if not a common etiology, at least a common pathogenesis exists. In order to ascertain their similarities and likenesses, this article examines the physiopathological processes of both clinical images. This will certainly assist in the production of a more successful therapeutic approach.

The aim of this study was to classify temporomandibular disorders (TMD) symptoms in two groups of fibromyalgia patients based on the timing of the onset of facial pain (FP) and generalized body pain (GBP) (GBP). Design of a cross-sectional study: Fifty-three women with fibromyalgia and FP were divided into three groups based on the onset of orofacial pain: Group A (mean age 47.30 14.20 years old) had FP before GBP, while Group B (mean age 51.33 11.03 years old) had FP concurrent with or after GBP. Clinical test The Visual Analogue Scale and the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders
In Group A, the most common symptoms were myofascial pain with mouth opening restriction (p = 0.038), right disc displacement with reduction (p = 0.012), and jaw stiffness (p = 0.004). Numbness/burning and myofascial pain without mouth opening restriction (p = 0.038) were more widespread in Group B.
Many of the patients had symptoms of the temporomandibular joint, mostly muscle disorders. Group A had a higher prevalence of myofascial pain with reduced mouth opening and right TMJ disc displacement with reduction.
