West Springfield High School is the high school for the city of West Springfield in Massachusetts, United States. It’s close to West Springfield Middle School and one of the city’s five elementary schools, John R. Fausey Elementary. The terrier is the school’s mascot.
The high school was established in 1820 as a school on the town common. The West Springfield seal features the school. The town hall in 1875, which is now the senior center, had classrooms for the town’s first high school. The cornerstone for a dedicated high school building, now known as Cowing School, was laid in 1915. It first opened in 1916 under the direction of William A. Cowing, who served as principal from 1916 to 1946.
After World War II, the town accepted a new high school building on Piper Road, which was started in 1954 just south of the current high school building, due to severe overcrowding and increasing numbers of students. The school, which serves grades 9 through 12, first opened its doors in 1956. The initial proposal called for a 1500-student high school, which was rejected in 1952. Instead, a 1000-student building was built to save money. The new structure soon became overcrowded, and ninth graders were relocated to Cowing School in 1960 before a 1966 addition doubled the high school’s size. [number four] In the 1990s, a wing of the high school was used as the Piper Road School for the town’s sixth graders before the middle school opened in 1998, alleviating elementary school overcrowding. The 1956 high school building was used until February 2014, when the new building opened, when it was demolished.
