Essex is a coastal town located 26 miles (42 kilometers) north of Boston and 13 miles (21 kilometers) southeast of Newburyport in Essex County, Massachusetts. It is well-known for its former position as a shipbuilding base. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 3,504. 1st
Essex was founded as a municipality in 1819. It was formerly known as Chebacco Parish and was a part of the town of Ipswich. In 1634, the first European settlers arrived. At the time, the property was part of an Agawam band of Native Americans’ home territory. Chebacco comes from the Agawam language and refers to a vast lake whose waters extend into Hamilton. The town’s easternmost point is named after Masconomo, the Sagamore or Chief of the Agawams, who led the tribe in the late 17th century. Chebacco Parish lobbied for recognition as an independent town early on, requesting permission to build a meeting house. Since the presence of a meeting house in a settlement conferred de facto sovereignty in colonial times, Chebacco Parish was refused permission to build one. According to popular legend, a written directive stating that “no man shall raise a meeting house” was given, and the inhabitants of the settlement interpreted this to mean that women must be permitted to do so. According to legend, a local woman named Madam Varney gathered the town’s women and had them build a meeting house while the men looked on. From 1678 to 1680, Jeremiah Shepard served as a priest at the church in Chebacco Parish. John Wise, who served as pastor of Chebacco Parish from 1680 until his death in 1725, succeeded him.
