Interests in Science

Faculty profile: alejandro olayo-méndez, sj – boston college

Dr. Curry’s research focuses on mental processes such as beliefs, principles, memory, and intellect, which are used by both laypeople and cognitive scientists to distinguish between creatures with minds. These events pose a host of interesting questions. What are the comparisons and disparities between lay and scientific views on humans (and other animals)? How do the two interact with one another? Are the mental processes discussed by laypeople the same as those examined by psychologists or neuroscientists? If not, what is their connection? How do people’s real mental states get influenced by social patterns of mental state attribution? Is it necessary for the metaphysics of mind to recognize discrepancies between individuals, such as what they believe, value, or remember, or how smart they are? What about the distinctions between humans and other intelligent animals? Dr. Curry conducts systematic and historical studies in the philosophy of psychology to find answers to these questions.
