“This is a heartbreaking and challenging decision. In a press release, Sister Yvette Ladurantaye, a member of the Holy Union Sisters’ Leadership Team, said, “We were unable to find a way to keep the school viable after carefully analyzing data and trying all we could to reverse the trend of declining enrollment.”
Hamelin thanked the devoted faculty and staff, as well as current and former families, for their tireless efforts to promote an academically rigorous and faith-filled culture in a letter to parents.

Lowell Sun Contributor | UPDATED: July 12, 2019 at 12:00 a.m. | PUBLISHED: September 15, 2013 at 12:00 a.m. GROTON, ONTARIO — Mary Hamelin of Groton has been appointed principal of the Holy Union Sisters’ Country Day School in Groton, according to the Holy Union Sisters’ leadership team.
For more than 15 years, Hamelin has taught middle-school science at the school. She has been the curriculum and professional development coordinator for many years. She brings to the role a wealth of expertise, awareness, and understanding of students and faculty.
The Holy Union Sisters have sponsored and led a school that is one of the best kept secrets in the Nashoba Valley for over 50 years, according to Hamelin. “It gives me great pleasure to work in a school with a committed and knowledgeable staff who are passionate about upholding the school’s tradition of instilling a love of learning and a dedication to excellence in all of its students.”
“Our call is to be at the center of the universe revealing God’s love,” she added, citing the first article of the Holy Union Sisters Constitutions. This assertion resonates profoundly with me as a parent of three Country Day School graduates and as a teacher at Country Day School for over 15 years, and I can think of no better endeavor than working with the faculty of our school to help students recognize their talents, grow them, and use them in service to others. Though Country Day is a Catholic school, our students come from a range of faith backgrounds, but we are united by our mutual belief in the equality of all people.”

I’ve had both of my boys at Country Day School for the past four years and am very pleased with their schooling. The school does an outstanding job of challenging students with advanced academics. They also teach them study skills, public speaking, time management, self-discipline, and a variety of other essential skills. The teachers take a personal interest in helping all of the students understand, which is made possible by the small class size. Furthermore, the school has a tremendous group of wonderful parents who all share the same ideals and ambitions for their children. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have met such a caring culture.
We made the right choice as parents when we chose CDS for our daughter. CDS is one of our favorite schools because of the loving teachers who give each child individual attention. It is a welcoming atmosphere where all of the children are acquainted with one another and newcomers are invited. They are not only taught at a high level, but also the value of friendship and supporting others. Each grade participates in a service project, which is fantastic.
