The mechanical consistency of a piece of writing is referred to as conventions. Conventions such as spelling, capitalization, punctuation, paragraphing, grammar, and use are used correctly to direct the reader through the text.
Strong Conventions writing has been proofread and edited with care. This trait is like an analytical trait within an analytic framework because it has so many components. When evaluating a piece for convention, think about how much work a copy editor might have to do to have it ready for print. This will ensure that all convention components are equally in play. Conventions is the only characteristic for which we make unique grade level accommodations, and standards should be dependent on grade level, with only certain skills taught included.
Using the scoring guide below to figure out where the piece of writing you’re working on belongs. Conventions should be the last of the Six Characteristics you ask for input on if you’re conferencing the piece with your instructor.
