The National Science Education Standards provide a vision of science learning and teaching that allows all students to become scientifically literate. Teachers of science, in this vision, are practitioners who are responsible for their own professional growth as well as the preservation of the teaching profession. The criteria in this chapter serve as a guide for assessing the level of professional development opportunities available to science teachers in order to enforce the National Science Education Standards.
Teachers should receive professional development in the same way as other professionals receive it. From preservice experiences in undergraduate years to the end of a professional career, becoming an effective science teacher is a continuous operation. Science’s knowledge base is rapidly evolving, and its relevance to social problems is growing, so teachers will need ongoing opportunities to develop their knowledge and skill. Teachers must also have opportunities to learn how students with a wide variety of interests, skills, and perspectives make sense of science concepts, as well as what a teacher should do to help and direct all students. Teachers often need the opportunity to study and participate in research on science teaching and learning, as well as the opportunity to share what they have learned with their colleagues.

A key competency of a physician is patient care. What society values in a “true doctor” is the ability to provide patient care while maintaining a sense of professional duty and temperament. Every medical student, resident, colleague, and patient may name physicians they respect for the treatment they provide and the manner in which they provide it. Individual elements of health care professionalism, on the other hand, are often overlooked. The way a doctor identifies with, converses with, and empathizes with a patient’s family is called “bedside manner.” However, having an empathic and loving relationship isn’t enough. A doctor who is well-liked by his or her patients but delivers treatment based on unverified anecdotal evidence is not offering quality health care. Similarly, a physician who bases his or her management decisions on the most up-to-date, evidence-based information is not delivering clinical treatment if the care is not reported in a timely manner in the electronic health record or if the confidentiality of protected health information is not respected.
