The book Bipolar, Not So Much, by Chris Aiken, MD, and James Phelps, MD, is for those who suffer from depressions and the continuum of manias in the center of the mood spectrum—more than unipolar, but not entirely bipolar—as well as those who treat them. Despite its current vogue in the vernacular, bipolar disorder may be one of the most misunderstood and difficult-to-diagnose conditions we face today. The wide variety of symptoms, the propensity to appear for treatment predominantly at the peaks of either mood, the profound and pervasive misunderstandings of mania and hypomania, and the correlation of symptoms with many other conditions make a definitive diagnosis of bipolar disorder as difficult as it is essential.
The authors’ concept of a mood disorder continuum makes significant progress toward the DSM’s specified but unfulfilled aim of moving away from a categorical to a dimensional model of mood, which is critical to accurately determining where an individual falls on the mood spectrum and has important implications for effective treatment.

Depression perplexes the mind, robs people of hope, and makes them blame themselves for a disease they didn’t ask for. This book gives readers a groundbreaking new understanding of depression as well as skills and methods for coping with it.
Antidepressants are no longer a one-size-fits-all disorder, and they are no longer a one-size-fits-all treatment. Mood disorders are now recognized as a continuum of issues, ranging from mild depression to full-blown bipolar disorder. There are many people who fall somewhere in the middle of the mood continuum, and this book is for them.
The first section of the book answers the question, “Where on the mood continuum am I?” Aiken and Phelps explain the main differences that characterize unipolarity, bipolarity, hypomania, mania, and depression by setting the groundwork for recognizing this continuum. Readers will be able to determine which meaning better describes their situation and use this knowledge to determine which treatment approaches will be more effective.

Why i went off bipolar meds

Bipolar, Not So Much is a fantastic book on the existence, signs, and causes of bipolar disorder. Indeed, the term “not-so-much” is a colloquial way of describing how difficult this condition is. They use the term’spectrum’ to describe a state of mood that ranges from depression to mania and is balanced by a neutral or opposite state of mood. Because of the frequency of enduring peaks and lows in daily life, the general population has a cynical stance toward this condition. Yes, everyone has peaks and lows, but having highs and lows isn’t a sign of bipolar disorder, nor is anyone laughing one minute and weeping hysterically the next.
The issue is not that the patient is having peaks or lows, but rather that the patient’s ability to work normally is being harmed by the lack of explanation for the spikes and their severity. The one aspect of this book that concerns me is where it says that one should question themselves not whether they have bipolar disorder, but how bipolar they are. Is it true that picking up this book qualifies one as bipolar, or is bipolarity a reflection of any average person, with only those at the extremes of the continuum requiring medical attention?
