Many of our students are eligible for free lunch and breakfast. Our school has a 98 percent African American population, 1% Hispanic population, and 1% Caucasian population. In the last four years, we’ve had four different principals. We have the highest rate of student mobility in the state, and our annual teacher turnover is about 35 percent.
My AP Literature students are some of the best writers in the school, but they have still failed to pass the AP Exam. My students are just as bright and talented as those in the county’s affluent areas, but we have been underserved educationally from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

Benjamin Banneker High School in Metro Atlanta is the newest high school in the Fulton County School District and a model for sustainability and creativity. The project included the design and construction of a new 340,000-square-foot campus, as well as the demolition of the current high school, upgrades to the sports complex, and the addition of new multi-use fields, tennis courts, and parking. This was achieved by constructing the new school next to the current school to avoid disrupting student learning, then demolishing the old school after students had been relocated to the new school; a multi-purpose playing field and tennis courts were then constructed on the site where the old school had been.
