Kushner tells the story of a group of people struggling to make sense of the world in two full-length films, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika. Prior is an AIDS patient whose girlfriend Louis has abandoned him in favor of Joe, an ex-Mormon and political conservative whose wife, Harper, is suffering from a nervous breakdown. These tales are juxtaposed with Roy Cohn’s (a fictitious re-creation of the notorious American conservative ideologue who died of AIDS in 1986) attempts to stay in the closet while seeking personal redemption in his convictions.
It all depends on what makes you fall in love. ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ may be something…more if the frivolous gayness attracts. It all depends on what makes you fall in love. If frivolous gayness appeals to you, then ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ may be a good fit. ‘Flawless,’ for example, starring Robert de Niro. If you prefer quick wit and clever repartee, however, you might enjoy Aaron Sorkin’s writings, such as ‘The American President’ or ‘The West Wing.’ Unfortunately, I haven’t come across anything that blends the two, let alone includes angels. If anyone knows of such a job, I’d like to know what it’s called as well. 🙂 (reduced)

The 20171 revival of Tony Kushner’s multi-award-winning play Angels in America at the National Theatre has all the makings of a box office smash. The show premiered on May 4, 2017 and ran until the middle of August. Despite record-breaking prices, tickets sold out in a matter of hours. The Eureka Theater Company in San Francisco commissioned Angels in America in the late 1980s, at a time when the AIDS epidemic and the conservative turn of the 1980s inspired many artists to respond to the crisis. One of them was Kushner.
Angels in America is a dense and nuanced text that defies easy summarization. In “A Few Notes From the Playwright About Staging,” Kushner maintains that Millenium Approaches and Perestroika are “two very different plays, each with its own structure and character,” partly due to their heterogeneous characters. Perestroika is often related to an earthquake, and 2Millenium Approaches to its aftermath. 3 Audiences had the option of seeing both plays in one day (with five intermissions) or separately. “Once engaged, viewers rediscover the benefits of persistence and effort, as well as the pleasures of an epic journey,” Kushner claims. It should be a little exhausting to watch an epic play.” 4 Although Kushner acknowledges Brecht and Marx’s political and artistic influences in his work, Angels in America is a double-edged epic play. Angels’ performance can turn epic or not, depending on the director’s choices;5 the play’s epic potential is actually dependent on the performance. The revival of Angels in America at the National Theatre combined music, political drama, and entertainment: “Poetry, Politics, and Popcorn.” 6

The play is a multi-layered, often metaphorical, and at times symbolic study of AIDS and homosexuality in 1980s America. Some major and minor characters are divine entities (angels) or people who have passed away (ghosts). Several of the actors play several roles in the play. The play has numerous other plots, several of which sometimes overlap, and initially and mainly focuses on a gay couple in Manhattan.
Millennium Approaches and Perestroika are the titles of the two sections of the play, which can be seen separately. The play was adapted into an HBO miniseries of the same name that aired in 2003. On the 25th anniversary of AIDS, the Seattle Times named the series among the “Best of the filmed AIDS portrayals.” [two] John M. Clum, a playwright and theater studies professor, called the play “a turning point in the evolution of gay drama, American drama, and American literary culture.” [three]
