Introduction to fluid flow

This book is for readers who want to start learning fluid dynamics from the ground up. It explores fluid dynamics from the viewpoint of a physicist, assuming a basic level of mathematics expertise equivalent to that of most second-year undergraduate physics students. As a consequence, the examples used are mainly from our own world on Earth, with some astrophysics thrown in for good measure. The text follows a progressive and educational style, taking readers from the most basic concepts to more technical topics like turbulence and magnetohydrodynamics. Exercises at the end of each chapter help readers evaluate their comprehension of the subject (solutions are given at the end of the text), and a special chapter is dedicated to presenting selected aspects of mathematics that beginners may not be familiar with, so that the book can be used independently.
From 1980 to 1985, Michel Rieutord was a student at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Saint-Cloud. At the Paris-Meudon observatory, he studied theoretical physics and completed his PhD thesis on “Tidal heating in near low mass binaries” (1987). Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics is Rieutord’s area of study. He’s especially curious about the effects of rotation, turbulence, and magnetic fields in stars (including the Sun), planets, and accretion disks. He has published over 130 papers in international journals and conference books as the author or co-author. For several years, Rieutord has been teaching undergraduate physics, fluid dynamics, and astrophysics at all stages.
