This book is essential reading for those interested in meta, pop culture, or gender/race/class theory. I used the previous version in undergrad and was so taken with it that I had to purchase the current one as well because of the new parts on disability in film.

The focus of this research is on how homosexuality is portrayed in American films. Its aim is to recognize gay characters in American films as well as the characteristics of gay films in America. It combines library analysis by evaluating the data using an empirical descriptive method. In the early 2000s, the icon and reflective principle was applied to 18 American films and 14 gay films from other countries. It demonstrates how gay films can appeal to viewers by depicting gays as objects of laughter, gays exposing their sexual identity, gay sexual scenes, muscular gay men, and gay abuse. They appear in genres such as drama, comedy, romance, detective, western, and horror/mystery, with two representations of gay people included in American gay films: the minority portrait and pessimism. However, it also demonstrates that some American gay films portray a positive gay lifestyle, including happy gay couples, gay marriage, and so on.

Humanity has always attempted to change in every way possible. That is how morals and values arose and continue to exist today. These values embody our collective thoughts and capture the spirit of the time and place in which we live. As a result, being American, like being Italian or Chinese, carries a certain stigma. The list is long, but patriotism, faith, exceptionalism, heroism, and other beliefs and principles that Americans care for include: patriotism, religion, exceptionalism, heroism, and so on. There is, however, something else that should be included in the top 20 of this chart. A certain manly archetype and a certain female archetype have also been passed down from generation to generation. This is best shown in films, as it is one of the propaganda instruments used to show the world the face of one’s own country. As a result, from the earliest stages of Hollywood filmmaking, the meaning of what it means to be manly or womanly in America was conveyed via the actors/actresses.
Regardless of how positive the film industry’s rise has been, there is still one flaw in the scheme. Movies not only “appear to” reflect our reality, our desires, and our feelings, but they also generate those desires. Humans have an imitative temperament, and they will imitate everything they see and accept it as fact, such as films. Furthermore, since we are discussing short film sequences rather than daily life, it is difficult to meet the expectations set forth in movies in terms of clothes, wealth, appearance, and behaviour. This can lead to people becoming deeply affected by films and, as a result, becoming disappointed as they discover that the values are difficult to achieve. With all of these facts in mind, one might say that movies are more than just entertainment; they also have a great deal of influence, which we sometimes overlook.
