Clapper effectively confessed to lying to Wyden in an interview with NBC News two days later, claiming he gave the “least untruthful” response he could to a question about classified matters. (Wouldn’t refusing to respond have been less untruthful if Clapper was worried about disclosing confidential information during an open hearing?) Clapper backs away from that admission in his June 21 letter to Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), instead pleading honest confusion:
