Science is a specific way of understanding the universe. Explanations of science are limited to those that can be inferred from verifiable data—that is, findings obtained from observations and experiments that can be confirmed by other scientists. Scientific investigation may be performed on something that can be observed or measured. Science does not provide theories that are not founded on empirical proof.
This chapter examines how science functions in relation to our general understanding of biological evolution. However, it starts by addressing another scientific advance that shook long-held assumptions and understandings: the discovery of heliocentricism.
The origin of night and day may have been one of the first major natural phenomena to be understood. The motions of the sun and other celestial bodies are mentioned in some of the oldest surviving human records written on clay tablets. The rising and lowering of the sun is the apparent cause of day and night. This is a point that everyone can make today and that seems to require no further clarification.

Michael J. Flynn proposed Flynn’s taxonomy, a description of computer architectures, in 1966.

[two] The classification scheme has remained in use, and it is still used to design modern processors and their functions. A multiprogramming background has emerged as an extension of the classification method since the rise of multiprocessing central processing units (CPUs).
A sequential machine that does not take advantage of parallelism in the instruction or data streams. Single instruction stream (IS) is retrieved from memory by a single control unit (CU). The CU then generates the necessary control signals to tell a single processing element (PE) to operate on a single data stream (DS), i.e., one operation at a time.
Single instruction, multiple threads (SIMT) is a parallel computing execution model that combines single instruction, multiple data (SIMD) with multithreading. In Flynn’s taxonomy, this is not a separate classification, but rather a subclass of SIMD. Nvidia often employs the word in its marketing materials and technical papers to emphasize the uniqueness of its architecture. [number four]

Only the crater of Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island in the Galapagos Islands is home to this pink iguana. How can scientists tell if this pink iguana is a different species from the other iguanas on the same island?
The evolutionary relationships among various species of plant-eating hooved mammals are depicted in this phylogenetic tree. Cervus elaphus is most closely related to which other organism in the phylogenetic tree?
Northwestern Ontario is home to the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus). Many parts of Canada are home to the northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis). Explain how these two mammals are related taxonomically.
On a field trip, you come across an unknown organism. You believe it is a new protist species. How can you test this species to see if it’s a protist? What information would you need to position it in the Protista kingdom?
I’d look it over with a microscope. I’d even look at the material that makes up the cell wall (if it has one). To decide if it is an autotroph, I will search for chloroplasts. The number of cells, the presence or absence of a nuclear membrane and a cell wall, and the material that the cell wall is made of are among the information I need.

Bloom’s taxonomy is a set of three hierarchical models for categorizing educational learning goals according to their complexity and specificity. The three lists cover the cognitive, affective, and sensory learning goals. Most formal education has centered on the cognitive domain list, which is often used to structure curriculum learning goals, tests, and activities.
The models were named after Benjamin Bloom, the chair of the taxonomy’s development committee of educators. He also edited Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: The Classification of Educational Goals, the first volume of the standard document. 1st [two]
Despite its name, Taxonomy of Educational Goals was published after a series of conferences held from 1949 to 1953 to improve cooperation between educators on the design of curricula and examinations.
The taxonomy’s first volume, Handbook I: Cognitive[1], was published in 1956, and the second volume, Handbook II: Affective, was released in 1964.
