Students will gain a lasting understanding of the rights and freedoms provided to individuals and groups in the United States. Important Questions: What are the Bill of Rights’ outlined rights? What role does the Bill of Rights play in ensuring diversity? What was the southern civil rights movement like?

This image should include people who are white, African-American, male, and female. A “bad” image should be included. A sit-in, riot, march, or war, for example… What really is going on in the slide?
“Imagine not being allowed to eat or sleep in most restaurants and hotels; not being able to sit where you wanted in a movie theater; being forced to sit in the back of a bus, even though it was empty; being forced to attend an inferior school; and even being prohibited to drink from such water fountains.” As early as 1960, these were realities of daily life for all black citizens in the southern United States. They were residents of a nation that was built on the idea that all was created equal. Despite this, they were treated unequally and the law considered them to be unequal.

The film depicts African-Americans’ fight for civil rights in the South, including the crises in Montgomery, Little Rock, Birmingham, and Selma, as well as the individual heroism of those involved. Charles Guggenheim, a four-time Academy Award recipient, directed A Time for Justice. From the assassination of Emmett Till in 1955 to the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, activists’ voices track key events in the civil rights movement. The restoration of the film, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject in 1994, was overseen by Grace Guggenheim, the director’s daughter. Via education programs tailored for primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, the Education for Justice (E4J) program aims to deter crime and foster a culture of lawfulness. These programs assist educators in teaching the next generation to better recognize and discuss issues that threaten the rule of law, as well as encouraging students to take an active role in their communities and future careers. In collaboration with UNESCO, a collection of products and activities for primary and secondary schools has been created.
The global pandemic has had a significant impact on education around the world, raising new threats and exacerbating inequalities. This was a year of redoubling efforts for Education for Justice (E4J) to ensure continuity of support to scholars and educators on teaching rule of law and related topics. E4J was awarded the award for its innovative and systemic efforts to expand on an already diverse portfolio of educational materials and create bridges between various stakeholders to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
