Teaching multiplication of fractions for 6th graders : math

Academic standards for each subject area in grades K–12 are set by the State Board of Education. In April 2016, the state board of education approved new state math standards, which will be introduced in classrooms for the first time in the 2017-18 school year. The math standards were created to ensure that graduates from Tennessee are prepared for the rigorous demands of mathematical comprehension in college and in the workplace.
The department has developed instructional emphasis guides for mathematics to promote strong classroom instruction. These documents were created to focus on the mathematics requirements where statewide data showed students were having the most difficulty, and they are optional additions for educators to consider. The aim of these documents is to provide teachers with examples of learning at all levels of success to assist educators in determining the extent of a student’s conceptual understanding of Tennessee mathematics standards. Using the drop-down menu below, you can navigate these papers.

Tennessee has adopted the Common Core State Standards, a set of math and English Language Arts standards aimed at ensuring that every high school graduate is prepared for college or the workforce. State representatives from all over the country collaborated to create these guidelines. Tennessee opted to follow the guidelines on its own accord. The Tennessee Educator Leader Cadre, which oversees the introduction of Common Core in Tennessee, includes TEA President Gera Summerford and staff members Karla Carpenter and Susan Dalton.
The TEA applauds the new standards, particularly the emphasis on higher-order thought, problem solving, and constructed answer evaluations rather than all multiple-choice tests.
Although we understand the importance of teacher preparation and help as we move to the new standards, we believe we can all accept that it is in the best interests of students.
In an attempt to promote Common Core and high academic standards in K-12 public education, SCORE launched a coalition of more than 100 industry, community, and education organizations throughout Tennessee, including TEA. The Expect More, Achieve More Coalition aims to raise awareness of Tennessee’s continuing attempt to raise aspirations in the classroom through the Common Core State Standards on a statewide and local level. Visit the Coalition’s website for more information.

We are expected to teach the academic standards set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education as a public school in the state of Tennessee. For and subject region, the Tennessee Academic Standards include a basic set of requirements for what students will know and be able to do at the end of a grade. The expectations in our state are focused on the knowledge and skills that students may need to excel in postsecondary education and/or careers.
The Tennessee Academic Standards must be accepted by the State Board of Education. Standards are checked every six years at the very least. Visit the state board’s standards review website to learn more about the standards review process, provide input on the updated standards, or ask questions.
