To be classified as a carcinogen, strong evidence must link the ingestion of a food or drink to an increased cancer risk and demonstrate how cancer can grow as a result. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization divides carcinogens into five categories based on their likelihood of causing cancer: confirmed, probable, potential, unclassifiable, and possibly not carcinogenic.
