In 2014, the 1B and 1A licenses will be controlled by the federal government in the same way that CDLs are. The new tests are extremely difficult, as they have both a written and a realistic, or hands-on component. According to what I’ve heard, there will be tonnage limits, and you’ll have to bring your own crane to the test. Currently, classes cost about $1500 and are offered at different companies. I have no idea how much the test would cost.
So, even though I get my Class 1b this year, will I have to re-certify via the federal license system the next year? I called DPS for answers again last week and ended up wasting another 30 minutes of my life because everybody who works there has their head up their ***. All I know is that I need to finish this quickly because my boss is depending on me to get my 2A.

In two weeks, I’ll be taking a 1B prep course. I recently submitted an application for the hoisting test. Can you give me some insight into what the exam entails? Is it similar to the 2A in that it contains a lot of Massachusetts general laws and hand signals? Thank you very much in advance.

To operate almost every computer in Massachusetts, you must first obtain a license. My 1c 2a includes excavators, loaders, and telescoping booms, but not cranes, so I’ll have to retake the exam. I’m going to make my guys get their licenses at the same time so a local guy will come in and do a prep course. (He teaches a prep class, and then we take the exam somewhere other than at home.)
