On September 9, 1991, the fifth generation Honda Civic made its debut in Japan. It received the Car of the Year Japan award for the second time when it was first introduced. The fifth generation cars were bigger and more aerodynamic than their predecessors, with a wheelbase of 257 cm (101.3 inches) for the three-door hatchback and 262 cm (103.2 inches) for the four-door sedan. The Civic Shuttle station wagon was not included in the fifth generation, and it was discontinued in international markets, although the previous generation wagon was sold in Japan and Europe.
To build a fuel-efficient economy vehicle, this generation of Civic used lightweight materials. The cowl was increased in comparison to the previous generation, allowing for more suspension movement. The ride became softer as a result of this update, compared to the previous generation, which offered a more compliant ride at the cost of crisper handling.
